Happy Friday! I have a stupid cold! But I managed to do some plein air spoon carving this afternoon. Will have to bring a phone stand next time.

This is my second spoon using @flexcut.tools spoon blanks with their multi tool carving set and carvin' jack 2.0.

The design is made to be comfortable to hold for ambidextrous use.

As a printmaker, there's nothing more satisfying than peeling the print to reveal the work! When there's multiple layers, each layer has the potential for an irreversible mistake so the reveal is that much sweet when it works out!

This is my 5th ever reduction print, and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. I'm so used to working from dark to light with acrylic painting, so having to think from light to dark is very confusing.

What to see more reduction printing? Let me know.

Max is the Canadian artist and North American rep for Pébéo. To say she is a power house at her job is an understatement!

This woman drives and flies all over Canada and the USA demonstrating and facilitating workshops with Pébéo's incredibly huge range of products. She also connects with other like-minded artists like me, to introduce them to new products, which has inspired me to start a confectionery themed reduction print series.

On Tuesday I declared that I wouldn't be carving until the full 6 week recovery post gallbladder removal had past.

On Wednesday I decided I couldn't wait to start this reduction print I've been dreaming of for the past 5 months.

Wednesday night while hand-pressing the first print, I realized that I should have listened to my Tuesday declaration. Watch full reel to see the moment it happened!

Thankfully the ring-washer press worked a treat and I successfully pulled the first layer of this 6-colour reduction print.

I immediately carved the second layer because I am so excited! I really am pushing my limits here.

Today, Thursday, I am sore and tired.
You don't realize how much you use your core for everything until you are limited. All that said, I am so excited to print the next layer!!!

I'm using @pebeo_officiel LINO ink, roller, lino and carving gouges for this piece.

After yesterday's workshop, it's to these right-handed ink and watercolours for me because healing from a broken thumb and cholecystectomy(gallbladder removal) is slower than I would like, and I keep overdoing it.

Would I love to be carving and printing, or hammering metal? Yes!

Am I still slowly working away at custome pieces I should be waiting a few more weeks before working on? Yes!

But anyone who know an artist and/or someone with adhd, knows that they need to keep their hands busy to stay sane, so I've settled on becoming ambidextrous while I rehab my dominant thumb and refrain from lifting more than 10lbs for four more weeks.

This is your sign to try collage!!

Today's workshop at Abbotsford Rec Centre was enjoyed by all. At least, that's what everyone said to my face. We combined Monoprinting and collage to create eccentric pieces of art!

Participants experimented colour mixing with @speedball_art primary screen printing inks, to create monoprints. We then cut those pieces up and rearranged them using templates to create either an owl, a star, a cup of coffee or a bunch of bananas.

The end results are 100% unique pieces and I am so proud of the ladies who participated. Before today, no one had tried Monoprinting or collage, and I believe most people went home with the desire to try it again on their own! I am calling this inaugural workshop a win!!

Collage is an amazing way to use up scrap pieces paper, old magazines, painted canvas you weren't happy with, you name it. It forces you to look at colour and shape in a way that's unlike other art mediums. 10/10 recommend.

Often the hardest part of trying something new is getting the courage to do it. I would go to far as to say that's at least 70% of the battle, and 30% doing/learning the new skill.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I'm having a good time finding out. I'm inspired by @shayla_giroux and a post she made about being intimidated about carving spoons until she just decided one day to do it. Now she's teaching others how to carve spoons!!

So go out there and carve yourself a spoon, or whatever it is you've been wanting to try!!

Bit by bit this spoon is taking shape. Using the Carvin' Jack 2.0 by @flexcut.tools with one of their spoon blanks.

I'm going to use this spoon for magical tea elixirs.

Finally making progress on this commissioned piece I started months ago before I broke my thumb. It will be slow going but I will get it done!

This exhibit was a truly magical experience! I have never seen my work in such a bright, naturally lit space and I am so grateful for this video that captured the show!!

I am looking forward to continuing this series once I am recovered from my gallbladder surgery and my thumb regains strength.

For now, I am quietly working on recovering and some secret commissions that I can't share just yet.

When life give you a bum left thumb, keep practicing with your right!!

Even though my thumb splint is off, the road to recovery is long. I can barely bend it at this point! I will be continuing my right-handed journey for the next few weeks.

On top of that, I have gallbladder surgery tomorrow, which will add another layer of slowing down. Ahhh. I'm nervous and scared for the next few weeks and will do my best to continue to share progress, no matter how small.

Stay healthy and curious friends!! Make time to do the things that fuel you!

I have a surgery coming up on Thursday and I am nervous. My mind is pre-occupied. I've been trying to write this post all day. Ahhh. I'm overwhelmed. Ok focus.

My process varies depending on the art medium but whatever I'm doing usually starts with a drawing/sketch and evolves from there. With relief printing the steps are as follows:

1. Draw
2. Transfer image
3. Carve
4. Print
5. Repeat

Shown in this reel are two pieces from my open-edition farm animal series which was inspired by my neighbour's lambs one spring.

If I am painting, my process is:
1. Draw
2. Paint
3. Hate it and walk away
4. Come back later and love it, continue to work on it
5. Hate it again
6. Keep going
7. How did I do that?
8. Repeat steps 1-7

Metal sculpture :
1. Have idea in mind
2. Plasma cut pieces
3. Hammer until in shape I like
4. Weld in place
5. Repeat until it looks like I want or scrap it and start again

What an amazing weekend in Oliver BC this weekend at Tinhorn Creek Vineyards!

Thank you to everyone involved in making this weekend happen - huge shout out to Claire from Langley arts council, Jesse from Tinhorn Creek, and all the people working behind the scenes to create events like this!

Alana and Paul, it was lovely to get to participate in an artist talk with both of you. It's so cool to hear about the different ways we all create, and what inspires the art.

Three birds found their way to new homes this weekend! I am feeling beyond grateful to everyone who decided to add my work to their collection and to those who chose to learn a new art skill this weekend.

Today I learned that the okanagan is so arid that one needs to use an ink retarder to slow the drying time down - I've never seen ink dry so quickly!! Being from such a humid place in the lower mainland, it never occured to me that that might be an issue. I stand by what I tell my students that no matter how long you've been working, there's always more to learn.

Lastly, thank you Blodwyn for driving all the way from West Kelowna to catch the artist talk and catch up! I appreciate you publicly - @iamshming your Mom is rad!

Who it is for???

I know this question is important for marketing purposes, to target your work to the right audience, but the truth is, I see my work as being accessible to all.

I work in so many mediums, spanning from fine art to craft, and teaching, that pin-pointing an audience is tough.

The heart of my practice is rooted in curiosity and a need to create, not a need to sell sell sell. Of course, selling work is fantastic, and please please please, buy my work so I can continue to create, but only if it tickles your fancy.

I believe my art is for everyone, whether it hangs on your wall, or I inspire you to learn how to make your own. Take a class with me, share my work with your friends, or commission me to make bespoke piece. Hip hip HorrART!

When life breaks your thumb, become ambidextrous!

Today's prompt for #marchmeetthemaker2026 is "currently working on".

At first, my brain was like, "you're not working on anything" because these mixed media pieces are being created to keep me busy while my thumb heals. And then I realized that this could possibly be a huge turning point in my life, and that seems pretty important.

I'm working on opening my creativity by breaking away from the dependancy on my dominant hand. Something I never would have done if I did t break my thumb.

That being said, I am uncomfortable and frustrated most of the time right now, which is usually indicates personal growth. If we are always comfortable, we aren't growing. And right now, I'm very uncomfortable = big growth!

And the answer is more complicated than the voiceover in this video.

As a neurodivergent human, my hands need to keep busy. If I don't have a project to work on while watching tv, I will sit and braid my hair in tiny braids, pick it out and start again, or worse, I will sit and mindlessly scroll on my phone. I would much rather keep my hands busy on a productive task, so whether I'm drawing, carving, painting, knitting, sewing, making bread, whatever, it keeps my mind quiet, and the happy hormones flowing.

I live with depression and anxiety. I don't talk about it often because why would I? It's personal and it's under control. But if I reflect back onto my darkest days, it's when I wasn't working in an artistic environment. When I had customer service jobs that would require every ounce of my energy, leave me depleted and devoid of any creativity. Those were the times I have struggled the most. So when I say making, makes me happy, the opposite is also true. Not making, makes me beyond sad. With a broken left thumb, I could have easily slipped into a dark place, and instead, I chose to look at it as an opportunity to work on becoming ambidextrous. It hasn't been easy, but it's given me something else to focus on and the results have been pleasantly surprising.

Ok that's enough sharing for now. Pick up a pencil and draw something with your non-dominant hand. It will shock you how hard it is.

An update about my little spoon carving:

It cracked right open. The trial became an error and that's ok! I learned a lot and had a good time making it.

If any wood carvers have any recommendations on how to avoid this problem for future projects, please let me know. It was a sucker branch from a plum tree, about 3/4" in diameter, carved it straight after cutting and removing the bark.

When life gives you carving tools, make a scoop for magical herbs!

This plum tree sucker at my parents house has been catching my eye for a while, and today was the day I cut it down to try carving wood. I've read that it's better to carve wood while it's green so after cutting pieces to length, I went to my studio to carve. I used a clamp because of my bum left thumb, and then I had a great time having absolutely no idea what I was doing. That's the joy of learning from trial and error. No expectations, just pure learning as you go!

Thanks to my Flexcut sliptrop (honing tool seen in video), my tools stay sharp, so even though this was my first time carving wood, I felt confident in trying something new!

I'm grateful to collaborate with @flexcut.tools for #meettheflexcutmaker and if just one person is inspired to try linocut or woodcarving because of it, that is great! The world needs more artists and makers.

If you live in the lower mainland, you can find Flexcut carving tools at @kmstools. Now don't quote me, but I think if they don't have what you're looking for they can order it in.

I'm so grateful to the @citypittmeadows and Pitt Meadows Art Gallery for having an exhibition of my work! I have never seen so many of my birds fly the coop in one show, and I am so hankful to the bird enthusiasts in the area.

I've never shared behind the scenes of packing up an exhibit so this feels quite personal, especially with the messy state of my work space.

Huge thank you to my husband, @philprajoux for doing all the heavy lifting and driving. I know it's always a stressful and a challenge to move art, but we did it, and thank you!
