Today was the quiet, official opening of my mini roadside art gallery. It is full of watercolour and ink paintings, all 1.5x2" in size.

I could not be more excited to bring this project to fruition in time for @bcculturedays!!

Originally built in 2024, during my artist-in-residency with the @cityofabbotsford, this mini gallery has been sitting in my studio as an unfinished dream until a couple of weeks ago when I got an email from BC Culture days that it was the last day to register events. In classic ADHD style, I thought, YES! a short deadline to make this long-time concept a reality, so I registered the mini gallery and got to work.

This exhibition will be on display until October 4th, on 80th ave between 240th & Telegraph Trail in the township of Langley. All pieces are for sale and can be purchased through my website and picked up, in-person, October 5.

Recently I had a reel get more views than I imagine and I don't know what I did. It's have over 80k views and it was something I spent no time thinking about. Just recorded making a colour palette and wrote "rainy day project: make a clour palette" or something along those lines. I posted to trial reels as I do with most of my reels lately and this one video blew up. So I posted the second half of that paint session as a second reel and it got a small fraction of the views. There seems to be no rhyme of reason these days.

Here's to throwing noodles on the wall and seeing if they stick. That's the saying, right?

Packaging - trimming, cutting backing boards, wrapping in crystal bags - a small fraction of what goes into a finished piece of art.

And yet, we don't see it, or think about it as something that the artist put thought, time, money, and effort into, it simply exists to throw out after the art gets taken home.

It's more than that though, it protects the work from greasy fingers(which we all have), dirt and dust, and bugs that eat paper(damn you silverfish and moths).

When you actually think about it, packaging is a vital part of the archival process. The next time you are holding a piece of artwork, know that thought and care went into every aspect of the finished piece, including the packaging.

1. You get to collect a bunch of tools and materials...that you store more than you use.

2. Your frames have a rustic feel...because despite measuring twice, your 45 degree angle is always slightly off resulting in fitting issues when gluing together.

3. You save yourself money..and get to pay instead with your time, blood, sweat, and tears.

4. They are all the same.. in theory. In reality, you never write measurements of what size wood you buy, you discover stain colours that have the same name, will infact, be different between brands, and your stain preference changes over time.

5. You continually learn and get better everytime which give you confidence to try more new things!!!

Everything, and I mean every step of the way from concept to frame has been crafted by hand.

Ok, I use my computer to manually re-size my drawing so that the image is to-scale of the animal I am carving, and I print it out on multiple pieces of letter size paper to piece it together to transfer it onto the lino using a 2B pencil and a ball point pen, but even that process using my hands!

Don't know about you friends, but I spend a lot of time uncomfortable and I believe that is a good thing. When we get complacent in our art practice, we stop growing, and growth is where the good stuff happens. So get uncomfortable and try new things!

This song was in my head for this but I didn't know the name. It showed up on my "for you" section and boy oh boy do these two mesh.

Adding texture to these 2x4ft low relief sculptures has been a learning curve. I have no plans, but like the music and this video, these pieces are being made with pure vibes.

Once you've explored creating a colour palette with primary colours, get funky with it - play around - add complimentary colours, with black and white, to get rich, deep greys, and unique mixes that can't be bought.

Getting ready to paint something and want to make sure your colours are right? Maybe you bought yourself some new paints and you haven't used them before. Make you're self a colour palette for reference!

This is 1/2 that I made today with @pebeo_officiel Origin eco-acrylic paint.

Making reference guides can help you mix the colours your want without wasting paint- It takes the guess work out and saves time when you are creating.

I often skip this step and then find myself frustrated when I can't get the colour quite right and that I'm wasting paint.

It's also quite meditative to make a colour wheel/palette. There's no expectation to be creative, but you get the joy of putting paint to paper.

It took me days to build up the mental strength to paint the last set 3 editions of this Salmon series because the size and number of prints was really intimidating.

I usually make smaller editions of 6 or 7, so an edition of 10 felt like huge jump, and my brain was frozen.

What got me unstuck? An imaginary deadline I made myself so I HAD to complete them regardless of whether I felt motivated- and I definitely was not motivated, because I was scared.

Then I started (because of the deadline) and realized how much time I wasted worrying about the painting, instead of just doing the painting, and how much fun I had when I actually started. It was a frustrating realization.

After I finished the first set of 10, I found myself suddenly motivated and excited to paint the last two sets. That's how motivation works. Do the thing, see the result, motivation to do more things.

I don't know if this is specific to neurodivergent minds, or if everyone struggles with waiting for motivation to come, but I'm writing this as a reminder to anyone on social media right now, endlessly scrolling because they are avoiding a task - put your phone down and do the thing. It will make you want to do more things.

Painting the large spawning salmon of this Salmon series at last. With 30 pieces to paint, at 20x28" in size(10 of each salmon species), I've been intimidated to get to started to say the least. The rest of the series are much smaller in size, so they felt more manageable to accomplish.

Normally, I will finish the art before making the frames but I was so scared to paint these salmon that I made frames first. I avoided the task of painting at all costs by doing my least favourite chores, I even chose laundry over painting... that is some serious task avoidance!

Two days ago I decided I would tackle one of each fish, and I managed to paint 2 in one night. I then had to force myself to paint the 3rd the next day. It was a painful slog.

I wasn't really happy with them until I placed the frames on top today... AND BAM! I love them!

Seeing the artwork in the frames got me so excited. It was seeing my vision come to life - the choice I had flip flopped on for days to go with a natural finish and distress the wood with chains(yes this was to prolong not having to paint the fish) paid off, and I could not be happier with how they are going to look when finished!!

Today I got the first set of 10 Coho Salmon Spawning painted and am excited to finish the last two sets so I can move onto my mad idea of creating 3 - 24x48" low relief sculptures before September 19th.

If this project turns out the way I envision, it may be the start of what I do with more of my lino matrixes. And if it doesn't turn out, I'll have learned some things. Win/win.

Hugh could not have been more clear that the reason he came into the studio was because he wanted the good treats that I forgot were there.

He saw me take them out with me earlier and when I came back into the house, I didn't have them with me. He then followed me out to the studio and started whining.

If only he was like that with my keys and wallet...

This! We used to do this. Try it. It's entertaining and so aatisfying when you get it. I had a friend who was so good at this, she could do it with mechanical pencils that had dangly things on it!

Personally I never quite got the technique down, but I am pretty good with a carving gouge.

Tell me I'm not alone on this!

Basically any time I'm ahead of schedule on something, I have a looming feeling of dread that I'm forgetting about something important. Despite checking my phone calendar, agenda, numerous and scattered post-it note to-do lists, I can't find the mysterious source of doom.

Nevertheless, at some point in time, I usually remember what the thing is, and even though I was ahead of schedule, there ends up being a mad panic near the end of the project, because I did, infact, forget a thing.

Trading off work space to keep my dog company is always a priority to me. He doesn't like it in my studio because there is no where for him to lie down. Well, technically there is but my studio space is in a perpetual state of creative chaos and it's not comfortable for him.

So when I carve and paint, I bring my work into my kitchen and work there so I can be with him, and have a familiar tv show on in the background.

We are both more content because of it.

1. It can be lonely. You will often spend most of your day alone, talking to yourself. When you do finally talk to someone, you might find yourself unable to recall what you did for your entire day, or really have anything to say.

2. Validation has to come from within. Seeking outside validation for your work will leave you unsatisfied because no one truly understands why you're creating but you. It's important to remember that you're making art because you feel a pull so strong that you have to create, not because you're looking for likes or acceptance. If you find yourself chasing validation, look within.

3. Your work has value even if it's not making money. A lot of people don't consider art a "real" job. In my experience, people, and often times those that are closest to you, don't understand how hard you work, because the hours don't always equate to financial gains. They see your work as something that can wait until later, or simply not important. We live in a world where success is so tied to our earnings that it can be easy to feel like a failure if we aren't selling our work and making X amount per year. Your value is not just the amount of $ you make, it's through human connection, experience, and adding beauty, curiosity and wonder into an otherwise dull world.

There is magic in printmaking that people can't truly understand until you are have tried to make a print. The hours of planning, carving, mixing of ink to create the perfect colour, rolling out the ink and inking up the plate for the first time... all to get to the moment of that first proof pull...whether it's how you expected or a total disaster, it is a moment of magic! It's joy, satisfaction, rage and disappointment. With hand-burnishing prints, the variables are high and no matter how long you've been printing, each print run is unique and a new learning experience. One that I am happy to continue learning every day!!

These Coho Salmon prints will be available at the 50th anniversary celebration of @mossomcreek, a non-profit based in Port Moody that has been helping the BC wild salmon population since 1976.

Spoon no.3! The most detailed and intricate one yet - a feather. This spoon can be held to scoop and serve, or to eat a hearty bowl of stew, intended to be used ambidextrously.

This is a new skill for me and each piece is so precious that I may keep them for show and not for use for many years.

Carved using @flexcut.tools Carvin' Jack 2.0 and some other flexcut gouges. I've sanded it from 80grit to 280grit, and then finished it with a beeswax and mineral spirit combo.

I have one more spoon blank from my Flexcut pack of 4, what should I try to carve next?

Did you know you can fabric print using craft foam from the dollar store and cardboard using @speedball_art fabric ink?

I wanted to print a custom pair of @dickies overalls for my brother's 50th birthday but I didn't want to use rubber or lino to carve things I knew I would only use once, so I grabbed some foam, cut up a cardboard box, an exacto knife and a glue stick. This is the result. I think he likes them!

My new salmon series will be released Sept. 19th along side the 50th anniversary of Mossum Creek Hatchery. It features the lifecycle(except for eggs because they are too small for me to carve to-scale) of three types of BC salmon: Chum, Coho, and Pink

All pieces are limited-edition, hand-carved to-scale and printed with eco-friendly ink in a custom mixed dark-blue ink.
