Right-handed carving number two- Easter bunny with basket o' eggs. Not as detailed as I would have liked but I do see improvement over my first piece.

This design was drawn for a workshop I taught today, along with the shamrock (I posted yesterday) and after carving both, I decided to go with a simplified single shamrock for class. Swipe to see some of the unique student shamrocks!! These were hand-carved by a lovely group of 55+ students at the ARC @abbotsfordprc.

Very first right-handed linocut in the books! A feat of perseverance, lots of breaks, sighs, and eye rolls of frustration were had during the making of this shamrock print.

I have so many emotions and thoughts about having to slow-down because of my broken thumb. When I try to write them down, the words jumble and dissappear. My brain is overwhelmed and underwhelmed at the same time.

As someone who depends on my hands to produce work, teach, and most importantly, stay sane, it's been an extremely challenging time.

Deciding to work and share my progress of my non-dominant hand skills does not come from want, but need. I need to create. I can't sit still and wait for my thumb to heal. I need to move forward.

That being said, not having the skills to do something seemingly as simple as writing a "to-do list" (see second photo) is very fatiguing. When something you're used to completing quickly and easily becomes a difficult task, it can be quite discouraging.

As I just finished writing out my packing list for the workshop I'm teaching tomorrow, the thought of going to prep those items seems incredibly arduous.

I feel like there should be an uplifting sentence here but I'm just calling it as I see it, poo poo, waaa waa, I'm venting.

I'm incredibly grateful to those of you who follow along and share in the ups and downs of my journey. I know this content might not be what you're looking for right now, but you get what your get and you don't complain. Wait, isn't this whole write up a complaint? No, it's introspective, facts and data, diversification.

Today I will be carving this clover design with @flexcut.tools, and this will be my first ever right-handed carving. This will be a sample print for a class I'm teaching this upcoming Monday.

I had a lovely time today at the Pitt Meadows community centre in Osprey Village with some enthusiastic future print makers. Out of the Valentine's Day drawing options I shared on my stories, the group chose none of them and instead chose a frog that I brought as an example carving!! What a wonderful surprise! We spent three hours carving a frog together, going over tools and materials and we printed the sample frog carving I brought, and we also printed the one that we all carved together. Each participant went home with two prints, as well as some hand-stamped bookmarks.

I had a great time and I hope that all of the participants had a great time as well

If anyone is looking to take a print making workshop, I have one coming up April 18 at the Pitt Meadows community centre, and I also have a four week class coming starting in April with the city of Langley, and an eight week class coming up in April at @pdacoquitlam Coquitlam.

Links in bio. Classes run based on minimum class enrollment. So sign up with a friend to learn an activity together! It's a great excuse/reason to get together on a regular basis!!

Ok confession: I don't do these daily, I make 4 or so at a time because if I try to do it everyday I get too stressed with the pressure.

Turns out that's a good thing because last night I had an accident with my niece's St. Bernard(he lunged, my thumb got tangled in his leash), and I'm currently waiting to see if my thumb is broken. It's my left hand, so whether it's broken or just sprained, I won't be able to make anything for a bit. Thankfully I've got 5 more mini artworks to share in the coming days.

The music fit too well not to use, but I assure you, I felt nothing but joy printing these new little frogs prints.

I had a great time testing the carving blocks and ink that come with this $35 blockprinting kit. The carving tool was dangerously dull, so I used my @flexcut.tools to carve instead. The ink is oil based and not water miscible, so clean up requires vegetable oil first, and then soap and water. I didn't try the brayer as it is larger than I needed, but the ink and rubber(lino) work well and print evenly.

Considering the price, I would give this kit 3/5 barens.

Details:
Multi-carving tool - dangerously dull
Ink - smooth, but difficult to clean up . Does comes with a small amount of red, yellow, blue and black which is nice.
Rubber - easy to carve with sharp tools, prints nicely, and comes with 3 - 4x6" pieces that are thick enough to carve both sides.
Comes with two round rubber pieces to make stamps.
Also comes with an ink tray and 4" brayer. So for $35 plus tax, it's a pretty good deal to get started with block printing, but I would recommend splurging for a @speedball_art multi-tool.

I'm quite excited to print this collagraph, although I am prepared to be underwhelmed. Learning a new art medium, or any new thing takes time, practice and patience. It can be disappointing to start when you know what's possible, but can't quite get the results.

Be kind to yourself. Enjoy the process and learn for the next one. We will be learning about collagraphy in week two of "Printmaking for Beginners" tomorrow night at TIMMs @langleycityrec.

Today was such a wonderful day. Phil and I dropped off the last piece of art, and some freshly hand-printed t-shirts to PMAG for Saturdays opening. We got a sneak peak of how the birds will be hung!!

We then walked Hugh along the river and took him to our favourite off-leash park in @citypittmeadows where he got to have a good rip around. After that, we went to @waldoandtubbs.fortlangley to pick up Hugh's favourite treats before heading home.

Now I am curled up by the toilet with a heat blanket on my back and a hot water bottle on my front having a mild gallstone attack. I am so thankful my surgery consult is less than a week away as this thing is so unpredictable. I have been eating an extremely low fat diet and today I forgot about it and had a small oat chai latte. No treats, sweets, potato chips... an oat chai latte. Could that really have triggered this? One mistake that's not even that fatty? Ugh.

This bird is a golden-crowned sparrow and they like to live in shrubbery.

I rely on @philprajoux to stay up-to-date on current events and tell me what I need to know. It's not a great system, but otherwise I get overwhelmed and shut down completely which isn't ideal either.

I am so saddened by the state of the world and hope that my artwork can give people a brief respite to the state of things, if only for a moment.

Today I broke in a new @speedball_art brayer that I've been saving for over a year! It was lovely and squeak-free.

Art brings us together, allows us to express ourselves and we need more art, and less hate.

That's a wrap on my first 8-week Printmaking Exploration course at @pdacoquitlam. I have to say, it was absolutely wonderful!!

I am so grateful to the 8 participants who signed up and threw themselves into the magical world of printmaking with me. It was a great group of people, who have become my comparison point for all future classes.

Together we made:
Lego print
Foam board print
Collagraph relief print
Collagraph etched print
Kitchen lithograph print
2 linocut prints
Silkscreen prints

It was a big learning curve for me, in terms of putting together a course syllabus, creating weekly handouts, packing and prepping for a different type of printmaking every week, and time management. I now feel confident in creating new, more in-depth classes for each type of printmaking, which will allow participants to explore their preferred print medium.

Extremely grateful to the @langleyartscouncil for the opportunity to have some of my relief prints available for rent through their new Art and Sales Rental program.

Tonight at the launch party, I found out that 6/8 of my pieces have been rented out to @tinhorncreek! I look forward to seeing them hung up at the vineyard!!

Although it looks like it was just @alana_evans_art and me, it was a great turn out with lots of lovely people at the opening. I'm glad I didn't let my anxiety talk me out of going tonight!

Phil and I have been watching Alone, and this one landscape shot was so beautiful that I took a screen shot(swipe to see). I haven't spent much time watercolour painting lately, and thought I would give it a go. It's not great, it's not bad, it is what it is. Need to practice.

Another successful trial!

Using lego is a great budget friendly way to explore relief printing. You can often find mixed bags of it at thrift stores and the combination of designs are endless.

For this trial, I went with a city scape. I wanted to see if the height of the LEGO would fit through the press and it did.
